Aprroximately 80% of Drake Institute's patients will have significant clinical improvement. Many of these patients who experience clinical improvement at Drake Institute had not been helped with prior treatments or therapies before coming to Drake.
Why don't the other 20% of patients improve significantly?
First of all, an 80% success rate for the complex and at times very severe disorders that we help is an extraordinarily high success rate. Even more remarkable when one considers that many of our patients were unsuccessful in prior treatments or therapies before coming to Drake Institute. No medical or psychological treatment is 100%.
Most of the time when the 20% of patients are not successful, it has to do with motivation. Motivation is very important for learning self-regulation which is what Biofeedback and Neurofeedback enables patients to achieve. In children, lack of positive reinforcement from the parent or negative family interactions can lead to decreased motivation in the child. There are factors and external variables in the patient's life that our clinical staff has no control over, including a child's traumatic past that we may not even have been informed of, family histories, family dynamics and interactions that can negatively affect the child's motivation and success or nonsuccess in Drake Institute's treatment. Sometimes even well intentioned parents may not be able to provide the supportive, nonjudgemental reinforcement that their child requires in treatment.
Lastly, in children with ADD or ADHD, 70% of them have secondary learning disorders. Sometimes parents will resist putting the child through the secondary treatment program. So even though the child may now focus better from the ADD treatment, they did not develop the necessary learning skills to be academically successful due to failure of not completing their secondary treatment program following the ADD treatment.
